Churches and religious sites in Rimini
Chiesa di Santa Maria dei Servi
Chiesa di Santa Maria dei Servi overlooks its namesake square along Corso d'Augusto in Rimini's historic centre. The Comune lists it as Chiesa di Santa Maria in Corte (Servi). Its medieval foundation and interior refurbished in the 18th century belong to two distinct phases of the same building.
From Servi di Maria to 18th-century refurbishment
In the early 14th century, the Malatesta donated property to the Servi di Maria order. The friars first built a chapel, then a larger church; its foundation is dated to 1317. That church's side is still visible along Corso d'Augusto, with a mid-14th-century Agolanti family coat of arms on a pilaster.
Between 1774 and 1777, church and convent were refurbished to Gaetano Stegani's design. Antonio Trentanove worked on the stuccoes: the artworks and Baroque arrangement characterise the interior visible today.
Façade and religious function
The present façade dates from 1894, designed by Giuseppe Urbani. At the same time, the upper part of the bell tower was rebuilt and decorative gilding work carried out. The church, made a parish church in 1806, is now listed by the Diocesi as a subsidiary church.
Along Corso d'Augusto, the church stands between Piazza Tre Martiri and Ponte di Tiberio; the Rimini monuments guide helps plan a central route.
