From Cattolica, options include a visit to Gradara, a day in Valconca's villages or a route along the Conca. The river allows an outing limited to a stretch near the coast; hinterland cycling routes introduce climbs and longer distances. The harbour and historic centre offer a walk within town.
Gradara: village and fortress
Gradara is in the Marche, across the regional boundary near Cattolica. Village streets, walls and Rocca di Gradara allow an excursion focused on the place's history. The village can be explored freely; the fortress is a state museum, with free admission on the first Sunday of the month.
The story of Paolo and Francesca, often set here, is regarded by Ministero della Cultura as a hypothesis associated with legend rather than a documented fact.
For travel without a car, Adriabus routes 130 and 131 link Cattolica and Gradara in both directions. The official Adriabus timetables distinguish weekdays from Sundays and public holidays; the return service is best chosen before departure.
In summer, a tourist train also operates from Gabicce Mare, separate from scheduled buses. The excursions from Gabicce Mare page explores this side and the San Bartolo routes.
San Giovanni in Marignano and other villages
San Giovanni in Marignano allows a first excursion into the hinterland. The historic centre retains its connection with the Malatesta granary: grain pits explain the fortified village's function and give a specific theme to a walk through the streets.
Saludecio has murals devoted to nineteenth-century inventions; Mondaino preserves its semicircular square in front of the fortress. Montegridolfo connects a village visit with the memory of Linea Gotica, while Montefiore Conca's main stop is its Malatesta fortress. Museums and fortresses have their own calendars.
Morciano di Romagna is a reference point for upper-valley connections. Start Romagna route 134 links Cattolica, San Giovanni in Marignano and Morciano, with different services on weekdays, school days, Sundays and public holidays; other villages require a connection.
For a day out, one main visit and a second destination compatible with travel arrangements are useful choices.
Cycling in Valconca
The Unione dei Comuni della Valconca routes include GPX tracks for mountain biking, road cycling and walking. Among routes starting in Cattolica, distances and elevation gains indicate very different levels of effort.
MTB 1: a 43-kilometre loop with 527 metres of ascent: it starts at the Conca mouth in Cattolica, passes Morciano, Montefiore and Ventena di Saludecio, and returns to the mouth on the Portoverde bank.
Road cycling 1: 73 kilometres and 1,250 metres of ascent, starting and finishing in Piazza Roosevelt.
Road cycling 2: 95 kilometres and 1,977 metres of ascent, starting and finishing in the harbour area.
Both road cycling routes use ordinary traffic roads rather than cycle paths; the mountain bike route climbs into the hinterland hills.
The Conca from its mouth inland
The mouth area near Acquario di Cattolica is a reference point for reaching the river route. Following the Conca leads from the coastal landscape to the reservoir and riverside vegetation. The distance can be limited by choosing a turnaround point in advance.
The two banks have different routes. On the Misano side, from Portoverde, EcoVia del Conca measures 8 kilometres one way, described in excursions from Misano Adriatico.
After rain, river paths become muddy. In Paesaggio protetto del Conca, wetlands provide a stop for migrating birds.
Boat trips along the coast
In summer, excursions aboard cutters, traditional sailing boats, depart from Cattolica's beach and harbour and follow the San Bartolo headland with its cliffs, Gabicce Mare, Vallugola bay and Fiorenzuola di Focara. Trips last an hour or an hour and a half, and some boats depart at sunset for aperitifs.
The boat list and departure times are published by the Comune di Cattolica tourism office.
A walk through historic Cattolica
In the centre, the portico between Via Bastioni and Via Cattaneo preserves old grain pits. Via Pascoli links Porta Vercellese with Museo della Regina, housed in the old pilgrims' building. Its archaeological and maritime sections help explain the town's history beyond the seafront.
The walk can continue towards Piazza Primo Maggio with Fontana delle Sirene, then towards the harbour.
For coastal excursions, trains from Cattolica-San Giovanni-Gabicce station are an option for Pesaro, Riccione and Rimini. The Cattolica guide collects urban visits; Riviera Romagnola itineraries help compare hinterland destinations.
