Parks and nature in Milano Marittima

Casa delle Farfalle

Casa delle Farfalle is a municipally owned centre in the Milano Marittima pinewood, at Via Jelenia Gora 6/d, open from spring to early autumn. It combines a tropical greenhouse, a greenhouse for Italian butterflies, an insect pavilion and an outdoor botanical trail.

Tropical butterflies and local species

The main greenhouse covers over 500 square metres. Ficus, banana plants and other tropical plants recreate a rainforest, with a temperature of 28-30 degrees and humidity around 65-70%; the butterflies come from tropical regions of Africa, Asia, America and Australia.

Il Bruco, opened in 2013, is a smaller greenhouse devoted to local butterflies, created with Università di Bologna.

Insects and garden

Casa degli Insetti is a pavilion with scarab beetles, giant cockroaches, mantises and leaf insects, together with a beehive and a giant ant nest. Outside, the butterfly garden follows a botanical trail with many pinewood plants. The visit combines well with walks in the Milano Marittima pinewood.

The ticket includes some sessions with staff, such as the butterflies' first flight on Sundays and public holidays; the full guided tour, lasting about an hour and a quarter, is charged separately. Admission is free up to one metre in height. Times and tickets appear on the operator's website in the Casa delle Farfalle information.
