Things to do

Seventeen things to do in Gabicce Mare

The main entries, each linking to a detailed guide.

  1. Choosing a beach stretch for a stay

From the harbour on the Tavollo towards Sottomonte, Gabicce Mare offers a sandy beach at the foot of the headland. Breakwaters off the coast and the headland behind characterise the landscape. The stretches are described in the Gabicce Mare beach guide.

  2. Finding the free beaches

Porto, Sottomonte and Fortino are the three landmarks for Gabicce Mare's free beaches. Sottomonte is the last, at the foot of the cliff coast: beyond it, below the cliffs, there is no pedestrian route to Vallugola. The free beaches guide describes access points and services.

  3. Following the seafront and its connection to Viale Mare

Lungomare Cristoforo Colombo follows the beach in lower Gabicce. The panoramic lift connects this route to Viale Mare in the upper town; Gabicce Monte village is reached instead by Panoramica. The walk can continue through central streets or become the route for an evening in Gabicce Mare.

  4. Crossing to Cattolica on the opening bridge

The opening bridge on the Tavollo links Gabicce Mare and Cattolica on foot. Crossing it also means passing between Marche and Emilia-Romagna without leaving the canal harbour landscape. The bridge opens for boats. On the other bank, Cattolica allows the route to continue towards the harbour, Piazza Primo Maggio and the old village.

  5. Viewing the harbour from the Gabicce side

The canal harbour on the Tavollo is shared with Cattolica. From the Gabicce side, the lighthouse and mural dedicated to seafarers' families can be seen, the latter created in sections between 2020 and 2021. The excursions from Gabicce guide also explores the connection with the sea.

  6. Walking through the centre between Viale della Vittoria and Piazza Municipio

Gabicce Mare's centre lies between Viale della Vittoria, Piazza Municipio and Via Battisti. Viale della Vittoria has the tourist information office and Adriabus stops “Della Vittoria” and “Palazzo del Turismo”; in summer 2026, Comune di Pesaro's shuttle to Gabicce Monte, Vallugola and Parco San Bartolo also departed from Via Battisti. Piazza Municipio hosts Turismo in Festa evenings, with music and family activities, collected in the Gabicce Mare events calendar.

  7. Choosing the Disco Diva period

Disco Diva, the Comune's disco music festival, takes place in June, centred on Piazza Valbruna in Gabicce Monte: reaching it from the seaside town requires the climb to the village. Edition dates are in the Gabicce Mare events guide.

  8. Exploring the market and smaller markets

The weekly market takes place in Piazza Aldo Moro, in the Ponte Tavollo area. Evening markets are also held on Via del Porto and, in season, in Gabicce Monte. Market days and locations are in the shopping in Gabicce Mare guide.

  9. Discovering food between the harbour and hills

Clams connect the table with Gabicce's maritime heritage; Colli Pesaresi DOC wines and Marche IGP oil bring the hills to the meal. The Comune falls within their respective production areas. Fish dishes and local products are explored in the what to eat in Gabicce Mare guide.

  10. Climbing to Gabicce Monte village

Gabicce Monte is the headland village, distinct from the town facing the beach. Piazza Valbruna and Chiesa di Sant'Ermete are walking landmarks; Panoramica opens views towards the coast and San Bartolo. The old name castrum Ligabitij documents a history predating tourism. Roads and paths uphill are described in excursions from Gabicce Mare.

  11. Entering Chiesa di Sant'Ermete

Chiesa di Sant'Ermete is in Gabicce Monte, along Panoramica. The current nineteenth-century building preserves a Madonna del Latte fresco painted in the late fourteenth century and transferred from the original church. It is the oldest stop on the village route.

  12. Choosing a San Bartolo path

Parco naturale regionale del Monte San Bartolo includes the cliff coast and inland slopes between Gabicce and Pesaro. Its network of 18 numbered paths ranges from short village walks to headland excursions. Routes and closed sections are on Ente Parco's paths page; the excursions guide compares the possibilities.

  13. Considering a walk to Montagnola

Montagnola, known as Tetto del Mondo, is a panoramic plateau on San Bartolo at 196 metres, where broom flowers in May. A section of path 151 leading to it has been closed to pedestrians and bicycles under Ente Parco's decreto n. 19 of 15 July 2026 for cliff stabilisation: the ban is in force and the park register records no revocation.

  14. Reaching Vallugola bay

Vallugola is a bay separate from the town beach, between the Gabicce and Casteldimezzo headlands. A stony beach and small harbour define its landscape. Access is from Panoramica: there is no pedestrian shoreline route from Gabicce Mare below the cliffs. Swimming is prohibited in the small harbour.

  15. Reading Valbruna as a legend

The name Valbruna appears in stories of a submerged town off Gabicce. Seabed investigations have identified natural rock formations, while an ancient landing place is documented at Vallugola. The Valbruna legend page recounts the story and what is known about it.

  16. Continuing towards Casteldimezzo and Fiorenzuola

Along San Bartolo, Casteldimezzo and Fiorenzuola di Focara allow the visit to continue among villages and the cliff coast. Both are within Comune di Pesaro. In Casteldimezzo, Chiesa dei Santi Apollinare e Cristoforo preserves old artworks; Fiorenzuola di Focara retains its core on the headland. They are reached by Panoramica.

  17. Planning an excursion to Gradara

Gradara's fortress and fortified village make an excursion into the Marche hinterland. Adriabus routes 130 and 131 connect Gabicce, Cattolica, Gradara and Pesaro all year; the tourist train operates only in season. The castles and fortresses guide explores the place, while Adriabus timetables help with the journey.

Character

What makes Gabicce Mare different

Gabicce is defined by the transition from sea to headland. Below, the town follows the beach and harbour on the Tavollo; above, Gabicce Monte overlooks the coast from Panoramica.

San Bartolo adds the cliff coast and inland slopes of hills and villages, with its own path network.

The hilltop village's history predates seaside tourism. Castrum Ligabitij appears in a document from 998; Chiesa di Sant'Ermete preserves a trace of that settlement. The harbour shared with Cattolica and the boundary on the Tavollo show the connection between two resorts belonging to different regions.

The sea

The beach

The town beach follows the stretch from the Tavollo towards Sottomonte. Sand, the gently sloping seabed and emerged breakwaters characterise this sector. Towards the cliff coast, pebbles and a different landscape also appear.

Vallugola is a separate bay with a stony beach and small harbour, reached from Panoramica: below the cliffs there is no shoreline route. The town's three free beaches are Porto, Sottomonte and Fortino.

ARPAM's 2026 classifications identify six monitoring points with excellent quality; any temporary swimming bans are signposted on site.

Gabicce's cooking starts with the sea, with clams and fish dishes linked to maritime heritage. In the hinterland, meals are paired with Colli Pesaresi DOC wines and Marche IGP extra virgin olive oil, whose production areas include the municipality.

Brodetto and passatelli belong to the Marche repertoire, with preparations varying between areas and families. The Gabicce Mare cooking guide explores the connection between coastal and hill products.

Useful answers

Frequently asked questions about Gabicce Mare

Where is the centre of Gabicce Mare?

The seaside town's centre lies between Viale della Vittoria, Piazza Municipio, Piazza Matteotti and Via Battisti, beside Lungomare Cristoforo Colombo, pedestrian-only all year. Viale della Vittoria has the tourist information office at number 41 and the Adriabus stops “Della Vittoria” and “Palazzo del Turismo”. The older core is the village of Gabicce Monte on the headland: castrum Ligabitij appears in a document from 998.

How to get from Gabicce Mare to Gabicce Monte?

Gabicce Monte, at about 150 metres above sea level, is reached by Strada Panoramica, the SP44, which continues towards Vallugola and San Bartolo. In summer, the tourist train and shuttles also serve the village. The panoramic lift on Lungomare Cristoforo Colombo rises only to Viale Mare, in the upper part of town, rather than to the village. Paths and walking routes on the headland are described under excursions from Gabicce Mare.

Does the Gabicce Monte tourist train run all year?

No. The tourist train climbing to Gabicce Monte and reaching Gradara operates only in the summer season, with a separate calendar from the buses. Adriabus routes 130 and 131 run all year, linking Gabicce Mare with Cattolica, Gradara and Pesaro, with fewer services on Sundays and public holidays; timetables are on the Adriabus website.

What is there to do in Gabicce Mare in the evening?

Evenings begin on Lungomare Cristoforo Colombo and continue through central streets towards the harbour on the Tavollo, where the opening bridge leads on foot to Cattolica. In summer, Piazza Municipio hosts Turismo in Festa concerts, and in late June Piazza Valbruna in Gabicce Monte hosts Disco Diva; evening markets take place on Via del Porto and, in season, in Gabicce Monte, where the belvedere overlooks the coast. Options are described under entertainment in Gabicce Mare.

What is there to do in Gabicce Mare when it rains?

The nearest indoor visits are across the harbour in Cattolica: Acquario di Cattolica, with indoor exhibition routes on its opening days, and Museo della Regina, exploring archaeology and maritime heritage with free admission. Adriabus buses reach Gradara fortress and Pesaro; within Pesaro's territory, the Colombarone archaeological area has mosaics and an Antiquarium.

Can Vallugola bay be reached on foot?

Not along the shore: there is no continuous pedestrian route below the cliffs from Gabicce Mare. On foot, path 151d descends from Panoramica, covering 937 metres, 10 minutes downhill and 15 uphill according to the park map; by car, Strada della Vallugola branches off Panoramica. Swimming is prohibited in the bay's small harbour.
