Magazzini del Sale are the two large buildings on the banks of Cervia canal harbour. Magazzino Torre is at 24 Via Nazario Sauro, beside Torre San Michele; Darsena, dating from 1712, stands opposite, across the canal. They stored the salt pans' product but handled different stages of work before sale.
From transport to storage
Salt reached the warehouses on burchielle, flat-bottomed boats towed along the banks. In Magazzino Torre, it was accumulated, cleaned and dried; in Darsena, the already cleaned salt remained until weighing and bagging for sale.
Torre is around 80 metres long and 26 wide and could hold up to 130,000 quintals of salt; Darsena up to 100,000. An iron bridge connected the buildings. With the salt pan's transformation in 1959, the warehouses gradually lost their original function.
The museum and current uses
Today Magazzino Torre houses MUSA, Museo del Sale, alongside exhibitions and events. Darsena, refurbished in 2021 and inaugurated in January 2022, hosts events and other activities.
The harbour walk offers views of both façades and nearby Torre San Michele. The production story continues on the Cervia salt and salt pans page.
