Museo degli Sguardi is at Villa Alvarado, 12 Via delle Grazie, on Covignano hill in Rimini. It holds ethnographic collections from Africa, Oceania and pre-Columbian America, with a small Asian collection. Admission is free and the museum opens on request.
Objects and ways of looking
The museum project, associated with anthropologist Marc Augé, also considers how the West has interpreted other cultures. Sculptures, textiles, ceramics and ritual objects are therefore presented as more than curiosities: the collections provide an opportunity to understand relationships between the observer and what is observed.
The holdings bring together collections of different origins, including those of Dinz Rialto, Ugo Canepa and the Franciscans of the Grazie. Some collections remain in storage.
Villa Alvarado and access
The museum began in 1972 as Museo delle Arti Primitive, from Delfino Dinz Rialto's collection, and remained at Castel Sismondo until 2000. Since December 2005, it has occupied its current home, Villa Alvarado, formerly housing Museo Missionario delle Grazie. Nearby on the same road is Santuario di Santa Maria delle Grazie.
Opening must be requested from Musei comunali di Rimini by telephone or email at least a week in advance.
