Cesenatico

Cesenatico beach

Cesenatico beach comprises five areas along about seven kilometres of coast: Zadina and Ponente north of the canal harbour, and Levante, Valverde and Villamarina to the south. The choice varies mainly with proximity to the centre, pinewood or seafront routes. The harbour divides the coast and remains the most immediate landmark for orientation.

Which area to choose

Zadina is the northern stretch, near the Cervia boundary and pinewood. Ponente leads from this area to the harbour, passing former holiday colonies. On the south side, Levante includes the central beach, recognisable by Grattacielo in Piazza Andrea Costa; Valverde and Villamarina follow towards Gatteo Mare.

Streets and squares are more useful than a consecutive numbering system for finding a Cesenatico beach establishment: the Comune identifies them by name. The Cesenatico guide relates these areas to the station, centre and historic harbour.

Breakwaters and changes to the beach

South of the harbour, a series of emerged breakwaters follows the coast. These structures were built to counter shoreline retreat, alongside beach nourishment returning sand to the most exposed stretches. In Valverde, erosion has also required winter protection measures.

The relationship between sand, breakwaters and water varies along the coast, and beach width changes with storms and seasonal interventions. Bans near piers and defence structures are signposted on site.

Beach establishments, families and accessibility

The municipal tourism portal describes level entrances and walkways at beach establishments; assistance in the water and bathing wheelchairs are arranged with beach operators.

Proximity to Giardini al Mare can help alternate beach time with a walk; in Zadina, the pinewood offers a different setting from the centre. Activities beyond the sand are collected on the Cesenatico with children page.

Free access points and services are covered on the Cesenatico free beaches page, including Tamerici and Zona Cesarini; its section on swimming with dogs lists the municipal ordinance's areas and hours.

During the 2026 summer period, until 2 November, dogs could reach the waterline and swim on stretches specified by the Comune opposite some free beaches, as well as designated areas at beach establishments. From 3 November to the Friday before Easter is the winter period: the regional animal ban does not apply, and the municipal ordinance sets no rules on dogs on the beach.

Water quality and lifeguards

The 2026 regional classification includes ten bathing waters in Cesenatico. Seven are excellent, one south of the harbour is good, and two, Spiaggia Ponente and Spiaggia Levante, are not yet classified because they have only recently been designated.

Swimming is prohibited at the harbour entrance. During the monitoring season, temporary bans are published on the Arpae bathing water portal.

Compulsory lifeguard cover runs from the third weekend in May to the third in September: from 16 May to 20 September in 2026. In other months, the beach has no lifeguards.

Giardini al Mare and painted tents

Behind Levante beach, Giardini al Mare follows Viale Carducci for about two kilometres, with paths, play equipment and fountains. It connects access points onto the sand with the urban walk.

Piazza Andrea Costa is also the landmark for Tende al Mare, beach tents painted by artists and displayed on the free beach in summer: the event began in 1998 from an idea by Dario Fo, and the 2026 edition, dedicated to him, opened on 23 June. The excursions from Cesenatico page covers the harbour, piers and routes towards Zadina.
